Mountain Lion spotted in Devonshire Canyon

09/17/10 15:12 At approximately, 1:15 pm this afternoon, a mountain lion was seen in the vicinity of 400 block of Winding Way in the Devonshire Canyon area of San Carlos, California.

Sheriff's Deputies investigated and determined that the lion was walking near a canyon fire trail at the end of Winding Way, within the animal's natural habitat.

If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.

Here are a few tips:

Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.

Keep a close watch on small children.

If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects.

Pick up small children.
